Afcon 2019: Host, Egypt off to a flying start

The African Cup of Nations kick started yesterday and it's sure to be an exciting tournament as the opening match proved.

Mahmoud Trezeguet handed host, Egypt a winning start to the African Cup of Nations with the only goal of the Friday's opening game against Zimbabwe in a high tempo start to the tournament.

In the 41st minute, Trezequet pick the ball out wide,  he collected it back inside the penalty area after a short pass, and then made a body check to shake off the defence and open room for himself to fire home a curling shot that gave the Zimbabwean goalkeeper, Sibanda, no chance.

Egyptian and Liverpool forward, Mohammed Salah, though showed no signs of post-season fatigue, after a long campaign with Liverpool, had Egypt's best chances of the second-half but the Zimbabwe defence and goalkeeper ensured a frustrating night for the Champions League winner.

Though, Zimbabwe had a couple of chances to equalise but they were not just clinical enough in front of goal.

The opening match, however, ended a victory for the host, Egypt.
