It has the largest margin of victory ever at the World Cup, and the most goals scored in a single World Cup match. The Americans out shot Thailand, 39-2.
Alex Morgan, later announced as the player of the match, scored five goals, tying a team record, and Rose Lavelle and Sam Mewis each had two. Lindsey Horan, Megan Rapinoe, Maluory Pugh and Carli Lloyd-two minute into second-half injury time-completed the rout.
But the flurry of goals also was a stunning display of the attacking force the United States can bring to bear. The goals came early (two in the first 20 minutes),in bunches (three in one six-minute span early in the second half) and late (five after the 79th minute).
